The beginning of Chris Havlicek’s career started at the University of Virginia, where Chris was a superior athlete as well as a top student. Although Chris had grown up in the spotlight as a son of the NBA superstar, John Havlicek, he was able to show just how well-rounded he truly was during his four years spent at UVA. Chris Havlicek followed in his father’s footsteps and made the basketball team at UVA. He played on the team throughout his four years and was the team’s Captain his senior year. Though he was a star on the basketball court, Chris never allowed basketball to interfere with his studies. Chris was one of the few athletes that was able to leave a lasting impression on both the court and on his studies. Because of his true dedication to basketball and his academics, Chris was inducted into the All-ACC- Academic Team three years consecutively (1990-1993), which required athletes not only to have outstanding athletic accomplishments, but also to have a high GPA.



Following his college career, Chris followed in his father’s, John Havlicek, footsteps once again and began a professional basketball career in the Italian Basketball League. While his professional basketball career only lasted a brief 4 months, it was during this time where Chris found his true passion, team handball.

Team handball, a contact sport described as a mesh between basketball and soccer, is very popular in Europe. Chris’s 6-foot-5-inch frame proved to be even more effective on the handball court than ever before. Ultimately, Chris’s drive and hunger to succeed landed him on the 1996 US Olympic Handball Team. Chris’s father, John Havlicek, was very pleased with his son’s adversity and had stated "He’ll be the first Olympian in the family, and that’s all for him." Though the road to the Olympics was anything but a smooth ride for Chris, he persevered and made his mark where it mattered to him most.

Chris Havlicek and his family made the most out of this Olympic journey by beginning the "Adopt an Athlete" fundraiser, spearheaded by Chris’s mother, which was a way to raise the necessary finances needed for travel, competition and other preparations the Team handball players needed in order to travel to the Olympics.

Chris is not the only Havlicek involved in the sporting world; his brother-in-law, Brian Buchanan is a former MLB player for the Minnesota Twins, the San Diego Padres and the New York Mets.

Currently, Chris Havlicek resides with his wife and three young children. Chris is very involved in his local South Florida community where he spends much of his time serving on boards of many charitable organizations. One of the most renowned charitable involvements the entire Havlicek family is a part of is the annual John Havlicek Celebrity Fishing Tournament, which hosts the biggest names in sports and media in a weekend of golf, comedy, tennis and fishing and benefits the Genesis Foundation for Children, a non-profit aimed to enrich the lives of children with birth defects.
