The Upton Brothers Value

The Upton Brothers Value
by James Arthur

Justin Upton did not have his best season in a fantasy baseball league last season, but that didn’t mean that he wasn’t still productive. Upton hit .280 with 17 home runs and 67 RBI with 18 stolen bases last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks and going into this offseason, he was still considered to be one of the best young outfielders in the game right alongside his brother B.J. who spent last season with the Tampa Bay Rays.

When this offseason began, B.J. was a free agent, and he was one of the first ones signed off the market in a fantasy baseball league when he decided to go join the Atlanta Braves over the Philadelphia Phillies. Justin Upton was still under contract with the Diamondbacks, but he was approaching the end of his contract, and there had been rumors swirling that Upton and the Diamondbacks were not on the same page and that Upton might be willing to go somewhere in a trade and that that the Dimaondbacks may have been more than willing to oblige. When the Diamondbacks came to terms with former San Francisco Giants’ outfielder Cody Ross, it officially became clear that there probably would not be room for Upton in the Diamondbacks lineup in a fantasy baseball league next season. The Diamondbacks got moving on trying to trade the 25-year-old and had apparently worked out a deal that would have sent him to the Seattle Mariners. Upton may have wanted a trade, but he didn’t want to be Mariner, and he promptly vetoed the trade.

Last week, the Diamondbacks were able to swing a trade that would send Justin to the Atlanta Braves to play with his brother in exchange for Martin Prado and several prospects and this time, Upton was willing to accept the trade.

It will be crazy to think that the Braves will have such a talented outfield, but that is exactly what they need to make sure that they can keep pace with the other good teams in their division. Baseball has always been big in Atlanta, and with the latest changes, they should be able to keep their fans interested. Justin should return to playing the way he was able to in the past, which is good news for fantasy owners who need his production on a daily basis. If BJ can match him, the Braves could really be onto something.
