No one could have predicted a few months ago that the Toronto Blue Jays would be in the discussion for having possibly the best offense in baseball. After years of playing behind the tough American League East teams, the Blue Jays are eyeing the opportunity to possibly steal the division and slug their way to the title. The question is, can they actually pull things off?
As of right now, they are one of the best fantasy baseball lineups on paper. The problem is, no one has really seen this team perform, so there are still a lot of questions to be answered. Those questions begin with most likely their one through three hitters in the lineup.
Jose Reyes comes to the Blue Jays from the Marlins. He had a subpar year a season ago as the team struggled as a whole. His best fantasy baseball days might be behind him, but he can still produce at a high level. If he stays healthy, few can swipe bags like him.
Melky Cabrera is another new acquisition, and everyone will be waiting to see if he can actually hit without being on performance enhancers. He was on pace for a batting title last season, and at one point he was among the best fantasy baseball players in the league. All that changed though when he got in trouble for drug use. Now he has to prove himself again.
Toronto’s Offense |
Jose Bautista has turned into one of the top sluggers in the game, but last year was a rough one for him. He was struggling to get much of anything done as he was dealing with some injuries. With an offseason to get healthy, it will be interesting if he can turn this team into the best MLB lineup in the game.
While those first three hitters are important, they have a number of other strong pieces to consider. Edwin Encarnacion slugged a ton of home runs last year. Colby Rasmus and Brett Lawrie are both above average hitters. Adam Lind, JP Arencibia and Emilio Bonifacio are all fringe fantasy guys that people should consider drafting. It could be an exciting year north of the border for baseball fans.
If everything can come together, people will be looking at possibly the best team in Toronto since their World Series wins in 1992 and 1993. Those are some lofty expectations, but they have enough veterans on this team to make things work.
